Geoff's Review
The Whitestone City Theatrette is found in Whitestone City, within The Precinct on the foreshore of Oamaru. It is a treasure-within-a-treasure. The Precinct is an important part of the remarkably-preserved block of Oamaru's Victorian past; a large, high-ceiling building, which once was a Grain and Seed Merchant's store. You can take tours, dress up in Victorian garb or ride a Penny Farthing carousel. There is a sense of experiencing history (Pakeha history in the Waitaki region) up close.
The Theatrette is a recent addition; a cinema as a central part of the display. During the summer months, it screens interesting short historical films about Oamaru's c19th history, and during the quieter winter months, when light leakage is not a problem, it screens recent art house films for locals, on a regular weekly (Thursday) or fortnightly basis (Tuesday and Thursday).
There are food and drink establishments nearby, as well as an excellent adjacent farmer's market on Saturdays.
NOTE: a story in the Otago Daily Times (27 November 2019) reports on plans to open a cinema in the town, which has not had a full-time venue since the Limelight Cinema closed in October 2018. It plans to operate as a charitable, community-based trust, with plans for two 50-seater screens. https://www.odt.co.nz/regions/north-otago/return-movie-theatre-rolls-ahead-site-found
