Geoff's Review
The Mustaca family, who own and operate the largest family-owned cinema chain United Cinema in Australia (7 locations), has chosen the fast growing urban area of Mt. Maunganui/Tauranga for their first New Zealand venture (opened Dec 2020).
Roy and Sam Mustaca have poured great energy and money into this new venue and I wish it success. The decor is tremendous and seven screens provide a great range of mainstream and art house releases (it was one of the few cinemas in the BOP/Waikato region to screen Kelly Reichardt's most recent film First Cow).
An independent cinema which is a little bit different than your average multiplex.
The only disadvantage is that it is rather difficult to find, if you are not familiar with finding your way around the urban sprawl of Mt. Maunganui/Tauranga, with its bewildering layout and relentless traffic. The cinema occupies a key position in the recently opened Bayfair Mall but finding the mall, and exiting from it, is rather a task.
Discounts are offered for students and seniors, such as Golden Day on Wednesday mornings ($10, with morning tea). There are plenty of food options, both in the mall and at the cinema.
