Geoff's Review
When I first visited this venue in late 2011 it was just a large shell of a building. It has now been transformed (with considerable council support) into a live event venue and a three screen contemporary cinema. The refurbishment, both inside and outside, acknowledges the long history of the site (first opened as Everybody's Theatre in 1926, featuring a copper-clad cupola). It was later renamed the Regent Cinema and although damaged in the earthquake, re-opened with two screens in 2011 until it was replaced by the current three screen set-up. The Town Hall Cinemas feature an art deco theme and are rather lovely.
This prosperous North Canterbury farming/service town suffered considerable damage in the 2011 earthquake but has generally recovered. This well-appointed cinema, open 10am to 10pm, offers a mix of mainstream and art house films similar to cinemas in other medium-sized towns, with its audience dominated by older patronage. The Town Hall Cinemas have a close relationship with Alice's in Christchurch.
There are a number of special ticket prices, such as Everyone Tuesdays and Senior Wednesdays, and there is online booking.
