Geoff's Review
An old-school cinema experience, in a single-screen, high auditorium, which claims to be the "best little cinema in the galaxy". It continues to feature an intermission. The cinema is situated on the main street of charming Takaka, where people flock to the beaches of Golden Bay in summer. Firstly you need to navigate the Takaka Hill (which would probably be classed as a mountain in other places), before you descend down into the glorious Takaka Valley. In July 2021, the hill was still under repair from previous storm damage ("Three Years and Four Months On" as a billboard rather tartly observed).
If you spend time in Takaka, do catch a film at the Village Theatre . This long-established (1984), community-run (The Village Theatre Society), and locally-supported cinema provides a good mix of recent art house films, with children's fare in the school holidays. Locals can join as a Member of the Village Theatre ($40 annually), which offers discounted tickets and members evenings.
