This is an important cinema in respect of both the history of film-going in New Zealand, and for the role independents play in the current exhibition landscape in New Zealand. It is the oldest purpose-built cinema in New Zealand and although it previously sat idle for long periods, it is also a prime example of community action successfully arguing the case for a local cinema. The Victoria is governed by the Victoria Theatre Charitable Trust under a leasehold agreement with the local council, and operated by a manager, drawing on local skills and experience.
The Victoria is an imposing building on Victoria Road, the main thoroughfare which winds down to the seaside mecca of Devonport. Shops and restaurants cater for all kinds of indulgences, for both well-heeled locals and Aucklanders who arrive by ferry to enjoy the shopping and the dinky beaches.
Film offerings cater for a wide range of tastes, with an emphasis on family movies in the holidays and a mix of mainstream and art house titles all year round. The Vic also hosts a number of special events, special interest films, cast and crew screenings, and small film festivals through the year.
Live events and special occasions, such as The Rocky Horror Picture Show (with Shadowcast) and regular live shows are a feature.
