Geoff's Review
The Gecko describes itself as "Motueka's Independent Cinema", in a town situated in a sunny fruit-growing and holiday region of the South Island (they used to grow tobacco there too). It moved from the main street to a site on a side street some years ago (it takes a little searching to find it), to a modest building which prides itself on its rustic charm. For those not in the know, the 'gecko' refers to a native lizard, and it is a theme continued in the cinema--included in prescreening slides of local wildlife and tourist attractions.
Screens art house titles, with 4-6 daily screenings across two small screens. I first saw Lars Von Trier's Melancholia there! You may also get a personal introduction to films.
The Gecko is run by a group of local shareholders. Ticket prices are reasonable for Thurs-Sunday sc reenings ($16) or Tuesday to Wednesday ($12).
The other cinema in town is the State Motueka, which used to be associated with the State Nelson.
