Geoff's Review
Gore is sometimes subjected to quite unjustified derision when this interesting Southland farming centre is well worth a visit. Some of the architecture in the main street is grand (check out the magnificent H & J Smith building) and it has a great cinema in the St. James. A short step off main street and opening in 1936, the St James had major renovations in 2008 and is the last remaining venue in a town which once boasted four cinemas. Run by a community trust, and enthusiastic staff, it provides a mix of mainstream and art house films catering primarily to older locals, and children/families during the school holidays.
