Geoff's Review
Film-goers to the popular Cinema Paradiso in the tourist resort of Wanaka have two art house option. Ruby's opened in October 2011, promoted as "Wanaka's Own Boutique Cinema With 3-D Technology". Just on the outskirts of Wanaka, as you head for the Cardrona ski-field and sheltering beneath a faux rock wall and the Jack Rabbit restaurant, this is a special kind of cinema and a place where there is no popcorn nor muzak. There is music but atmospheric rather than intrusive. It is certainly not a place you should bring your own refreshments nor put your feet up on the seats.
Films are a mix of mainstream and art house and the film-going favours art house/foreign films. Tuesday is Locals Day and Wednesday night is Locals Night. Food + film specials include: Martini Monday and DeLuxe Dog on Wednesday. Ruby's usually opens between 11-noon.
Wanaka is able to sustain two vibrant art house cinemas, primarily for well-heeled, older locals but also for the stream of foreign tourists drawn to the wonderful landscapes of lake, mountains and rock and other diversions (such as Puzzling World and Warbirds & Wheels).
The bar is a delight, with velvety walls and large images of stars such as Sophia Loren , Audrey Hepburn, Paul Newman and Marlon Brando, with more celestial stars on the ceiling. Ruby's features in The Reel People of New Zealand doco, where it can be see it in its full glory, with host Jordi.
This cinema is an excellent example of a new style of film-going, where sophistication is blended with nostalgia--"where you can wear your best dress, enjoy your favourite drink and escape to another world".
Ruby's is also involved with the annual Mountain Film Festival.
