Geoff's Review
Most recent visit: June 2022
A mecca for film-goers, and the largest art house cinema in Auckland, the Rialto has been sited smack-dab in the busy retail strip of Broadway, Newmarket for nearly 20 years. Renovated in 2006, it promotes itself as 'The Home of Fine Film', with some justification for it specialises in innovative film programming. It continues to offer Tea Party screenings, Met Opera and National Theatre seasons, the Resene Architecture and Design Film Festival , the French Film Festival Festival, and 10-15 art house titles in its daily schedule. It also make a special point of screening New Zealand films and documentaries and has provided a venue for past NZ International Film Festivals---and will frequently premiere local films, with the film-makers doing a Q&A. It is associated with the Rialto Dunedin.
On the first visit, finding the right screen is a bit like finding your departure gate at the airport but return visits to this bustling and bright cinema (the foyer lighting is tremendous) are highly recommended.
You can join their free Cine Buzz film club, to earn concessions and reward points.
The adjacent food-hall offers excellent Indian and Thai food, together with a Subway outlet.
