Geoff's Review
As you head up Brooklyn Road (bus route No. 7) to the hilly suburb of Brooklyn, one of the most welcome sights in the small clusters of shops and cafes at the top of the hill is the art deco-styled sign for the Penthouse. A long-established Wellington favourite, this family-owned cinema (first opened in 1939) is very oriented towards an older, educated audience who favour film-going as an outing combined with dining and coffee, rather than popcorn experience. It is a lovely cinema, which offers atmosphere and style, together with innovative film programming.

It was voted the Best New Zealand Cinema in 2009 by the Australasian Independent Distributors Assn and it continues to serves its patrons very well.
The ambience (restful lighting, luxurious seating), along with the food and film offerings provide for the needs of an older, affluent cinema-going clientele but there are also opportunities for grandparents to take children along to school holiday films.
The staff is young and attentive. Good adjacent Park&Pay parking.
The Brooklyn Deli next door is also worth a visit and there are other cafes just around the corner.
