Geoff's Review
As part of the performing arts centre on the main street of the West Coast town of Westport, film-going is provided by two screens, both named after local identities who made an important contribution to film exhibition in the town. As with other West Coast cinemas, the NBS Westport is a community resource, offering a venue for live events and indoor sports, as well as ensuring a steady supply of recent mainstream and art house titles. It is a well-maintained facility and the screening technology is excellent.
The NBS Westport hosts twice-monthly screenings of the recently-formed Westport Film Society.
As the economy of the West Coast shifts away from resource exploitation (coal in particular), towns like Westport are turning their attention to tourism as a major attraction, drawing on their colourful past (uranium was once mined in the Buller Gorge in the 1950s!). Check out the magnificent Municipal Chambers as an example of a much grander Westport and PR's cafe ('A Westport Legend') as a sign of its c21st character.
As with the Greymouth Regent, NBS (Nelson Building Society, NZ's oldest building society) is a major sponsor.
