This art house complex promotes itself as 'The Magnificent Matakana Cinemas', with some justification. It was established in 2007, as a core element in the Matakana Village shopping complex and in past years, it has won the Top Indie Cinema award (an online competition run by flicks.co.nz).
Matakana is very much a modern country village, where folk gather not to talk cattle prices or haymaking, but come to sample the renowned Saturday Farmer's Market or shop for up-market clothing, art and books.
The local 'catchment' population is around 15,000 people--retirees or holiday home owners in sought-after places like Leigh or Omaha Beach but there is also a very large influx of day-trippers or week-enders from Auckland. The spring cherry blossom is very, very pretty.
The cinemas were built to provide for locals and visitors and they record 80,000 visits a year, which is remarkable for a venue which requires some travelling for many.
One major reason is that the cinemas have been built with real style and attention to detail. One screen is like entering a Turkish boudoir, another features the largest chandelier in the Southern Hemisphere, and the very best has 32,000 artificial roses encrusted on the curved ceiling. This makes for a very different cinema experience, far removed from the humdrum familiarity of the multiplex.
Film offerings include both art house titles and family movies, with peak periods in the school holidays and summer months. New Zealand features and documentaries find a place here too.
