The latest addition to the Light House chain (opened in late 2012, the Light House Cuba is found in a little dog-leg street which runs between Vivian Street and Abel Smith Street in central Wellington. Across the street from the rather charming Havana Bar, this cinema provides for urban, discerning film-goers (Hanecke's demanding film 'Amour' was attracting good audiences when I visited in February 2013, 'Detroit' in November 2017 and ‘Celia’ in March 2019.
It is housed in a building with inner-city cred (formerly a stables, then a motor mechanics), and close by the rather raffish but increasingly trendy Cuba Street precinct.
Screens Show Me Shorts and a wide range of art house films, with innovative concessions, to attract both a younger crowd eg Student Thursday, where $11.50 buys you a ticket and a free hot drink, Treat Yourself Tuesday, Monday Escape and Senior Wednesday at ($11.50). Phone bookings available.
The Light House Cuba does not advertise widely, depending on word-of-mouth to build a loyal patronage--as well as employing a young and enthusiastic staff.
A lovely foyer and interesting information posted on the walls.
Highly recommended. Others agree, as this cinema was voted Best Cinema in Wellington in the Capital Magazine Best of 2018 Awards.
