Geoff's Review
The Len Lye Centre Cinema, a smart newish cinema, is an integral part of the stunning Len Lye Centre/Govett-Brewster Art Gallery. It screens a curated programme of older films (Dirty Harry and Age of Innocence in February 2016), with former Director Simon Rees taking a leading role in film choices. The cinema has continued with a mix of older titles and recent art house releases, and often has themed programmes eg in October 2020, the theme was Paranoia and films included Invasion of the Body Snatchers (1978) and Black Swan (2010).
Screenings are at 11am and 7pm Tues/Wed/Thurs/Friday, and Saturday and Sunday afternoons. There are also daily free screenings of the innovative films of Len Lye, such as 'Flip & Two Twisters'. It also hosts the fortnightly screenings of the New Plymouth Film Society (see www.nzfilmsociety.org.nz/new-plymouth).
You can book tickets online or at Govett Brewster Shop.
The Len Lye Centre Cinema has provided a boost to film culture in Taranaki, which had diminished with the demise of the Art House cinema in Devon Street.
The 4th Stage Theatre in New Plymouth (11 Baring Terrace, adjacent to Strandon Beach) also hosts visiting programmes of short films.
