Geoff's Review
The Empire is a remarkable local cinema in the outer suburb of Island Bay in Wellington. After a long period sitting idle, following a life as a single-screen cinema and hardware store, it was re-opened due to the efforts of local Ian Hay.
It closed again in 2013, only to re-open again with new family owners in 2015. It continues to provide a gathering place for locals and provides a safe and welcoming environment for children.
The entrance opens on to The Parade, a broad main/bus route leading to Island Bay and the sea, and the locals seem to treat the cinema and cafe with great affection. An on-site kitchen provides dining opportunities with brunch and dinner daily (pizza and pastas a speciality), whilst the cinema offers a wide range of films to cater for most tastes (mainstream and art house). Provides 10-trip loyalty cards.
The primary audience are regulars but people also travel from all over Wellington to this venue.
Island Bay has a unique atmosphere, with a population mix of families, young professionals and some vestiges of its Italian immigrant heritage. Good parking nearby or take a Route 1 Island Bay bus.
Check out the interesting St Vincent de Paul op-shop across the road and there are range of cafes are just up the road, in the Island Bar village.
