Geoff's Review
They name their cinemas after mythical women in Central Otago! Dorothy Browns is down an alley-way and up a flight of stairs, just off the historic street of this old gold town (Arrowtown celebrated 150 years of gold exploration in 2014). The beautiful Arrow River flows by just one block away.
Indeed, Buckingham Street feels like a street with no peer in New Zealand, lined with low, 19th century shops and cottages and thriving businesses selling expensive goods to tourists. But it is much more low-key and less touristy than nearby Queenstown.Indeed, it is one of my favourite places in New Zealand.
Both the town and Dorothy Browns have a special kind of character. DB's is a thriving cinema, now 20 years old, but is also a bookshop and a bar. Any bookshop which sells the latest issue of the Atlantic and Vanity Fair has my approval!
In winter, an open fire welcomes you whilst the temperature drops below zero outside. Have a beer at the great New Orleans Hotel across the street, and then pop along to Dorothy Browns for a recent art house film and special events, such as the French Film Festival. Other festivals include the French Film Festival, Italian Film Festival, Czech Film Festival, as well as Natioinal Theatre screenings. It is a welcoming place and you will love the atmosphere.
The Queenstown Film Society used to gather here but is currently (2020) being hosted at Readings Cinema in Querenstown.
If you are a local, you can join the Dorothy Browns Membership Package which offers a range of discounts and special offers, for $25 annually.
