Geoff's Review
The Dome, just off the main drag (Gladstone Road) in Gisborne, is found behind a black-painted door to the right of the main entrance of a grand old colonial two-story mansion.
Another great example of venue recycling, The Dome was previously the billiards room of The Poverty Bay Club. The old blokes moved on about 15 years ago and their old haunt has been transformed into a art house cinema, with a particularly romantic and elegant ambience. Unique features include a wonderful, triple domed ceiling (originally shipped out from England), and an unique choice of viewing positions.
The kind of place you go out for a special evening; indulge in a drink and a pizza at the lovely bar, and then catch a recent art house release. There is a new outdoor dining area, with a 'virtual' waterfall in summer and a roaring fireplace in winter.
Fine dining at the Dome (from 5pm,Thursday to Saturday) is a recent innovation, with seasonal menus. Booking at sally@domecinema,co.nz
The Dome has seven film screenings per week (Wed to Sunday), with lots of live events (music, theatre, poetry readings) in between.
Gisborne is a long drive from most places but attracts large summer crowds, especially for the music-and-booze Rhythm & Vines Festival at New Year. But it has other attractions and The Dome is one of them.

Another accolade: In April 2016, the Dome was judged #2 in the world in the Jetsetters "The World's Coolest Dine-In Theaters'. .It was the only cinema chosen in Australia and New Zealand.
In July 2016, The Dome was busy fund-raising for a DCP upgrade, with terrific community support. It should get there soon.
