Crystal Palace (Mt. Eden)
This message came to me in January 2015, indicating that this historic old cinema (opened 1916 and closed in 2005) still had an on-going, albeit occasional, place amongst Auckland cinemas. In addition to monthly screenings of so-bad-it's-good The Room, the Palace also hosts music events, such as a concert by NZ band songstress Holly Fullbrook and her band Tiny Ruins in 2014.
I just thought I’d touch base and let you know that The Crystal Palace in Mt Eden does still function as a theatre.
Screenings are limited at the moment to monthly viewings of Tommy Wiseau’s The Room (2003)… usually the first Friday of every month and the odd special event.
Recently Auckland's annual 24Hour Movie Marathon was held there with several hundred people camped out in the theatre to watch the usual diverse selection of film offered by Ant Timpson and his collaborators.
The auditorium is currently lit by halogen work lights but for that weekend I had a go at lighting some of the features.
The cinema still uses two Peerless Magnarc Carbon Arc projectors… lovingly maintained by the current projectionist.
I’ve been successful in pitching The Crystal Palace as a project for this year’s Loading Docs (loadingdocs.net) and will keep you updated if you’re interested.
If you have any information, images or potential sources of information or images that might help us that would be appreciated.
Update Oct 2019: I have asked around and nothing seems to be happening in respect of screenings returning to The Crystal Palace and its future remains uncertain.
