Geoff's Review
Central Otago is replete with visual wonders; the lakes, the mountain, the lupins in flower. But the number of boutique cinemas in this part of New Zealand are a marvel. The Clyde Cinema (est. 2013) is one such venue, in the historic, fruit-growing town of Clyde., offering mainly art house films--together with the occasional Star Wars. An agreeable little cinema.
Jan 2021 update from the Clyde Cinema:
An introduction to the new owner, Mark Bruce, and the first of changes you’ll see in the near future. Also, a plea to bear with us as we put the licencing in place for you to be able to enjoy a glass of Central Otago’s finest with your movie. Things take a little longer at this time of the year.
One change to look forward to is Monday Night Classic Cinema - check out the next newsletter for details. And yes, we will have links to trailers for the movies in the next newsletter – it’s just a matter of sorting out computer permissions. I should ask a 12-year-old for help.
For now, meet our new owner, Mark Bruce:
It seems inevitable that Mark Bruce would one day own the Clyde Cinema.
Born in Edinburgh, Scotland, the self-employed IT consultant moved to Alexandra in 2016 with his family.
“I’ve been a customer here for five years and I think it’s a great cinema,” he said. “I’ve thought for the last two or three years, ‘If Clyde Cinema is ever up for sale, I’d like to have it.”
Movies have long been a part of Mark’s life, and his introduction to the cinema began at age 7, with The Empire Strikes Back, then Raiders of the Lost Ark.
“I just love the experience,” he said. “I’m really interested in movies overall and I love the experience of the cinema with the big screen, the sound, the atmosphere – really getting the full experience of the movie.
“I had a reasonably sophisticated home cinema conversion in my old home in London so it’s always been a real interest of mine – movies, cinema equipment, the technical side of it.”
Mark is also enchanted by Clyde itself, which he describes as a lovely little town that defines the Central Otago gold era.
Don’t be surprised to see him waiting in Clyde Cinema’s lobby as the last show for the day ends, before he and his oldest son sit down to enjoy a private screening of one of their favourite movies.
