.Geoff's Review
Re-opened in 2016, the Central Hawke's Bay rural service town of Waipukurau ('River of edible fungi') is now well-served by the single-screen Civic Theatre, which a programme Tuesday-Sunday of recent releases, with a mix of mainstream and art house titles.
First opened in 1981, the Civic Theatre was designed by Hastings architect Peter Holland to replace the old Municipal Theatre in Kitchener St which had to be demolished after being declared an earthquake risk. It is currently leased from the CHB Council, who also provide upkeep.
The cinema will shortly be joined by a local radio station, which will housed in the same building. It will also host the NZ premiere of This Town on August 4 2020; a feature film which was largely shot locally.
