Geoff's Review
An old-style cinema sited on the main street of the small town of Otaki on the Kapiti Coast, some 80km north of Wellington. SH One passes through Otaki but the town proper is 1.5km down a side road. The Civic is now primarily used for local or visiting theatre but comes back to life as a major film venue in March each year, for the Maoriland Film Festival. This festival is well worth getting to, as an invigorating five day festival of indigenous films (short film, features, documentaries, talk and collegiality) from New Zealand and around the globe.
2022 Update: The Civic has been refurbished, is looking good and is once again hosting screenings at the Maoriland Film Festival 2022.
