Geoff's Review
When I first visited the Cinema Paradiso in late June 2012, it was a cinema in transition. When I returned in June 2015, it had moved from its old site at 1 Ardmore Street (on the left as you swept down the hill towards the town centre of Wanaka and the lake). A third visit in December 2019 revealed the extensive architectural alterations, transforming the older building into exteriors and interiors which are sleek and contemporary.
Its now well-established new site, featuring three screens and expansive cafe space, is around the corner in Brownston Street--in a renovated Catholic church, opposite the New World supermarket. It was the right kind of move, in my opinion, as too many old cinemas are being turned in churches (usually of the fundamentalist kind) in New Zealand.
The Paradiso has been a long-established feature of life in Wanaka, drawing locals and tourists in the beautiful resort region of Wanaka, Queenstown, Roxborough and Arrowtown. It is quite extraordinary that this resort town is able to sustain two art house cinemas (see Rubys), with Dorothy Brown's in nearby Arrowtown,
Paradiso features a range of art house and mainstream titles. Opens around noon and 11am on Saturday and Sunday, and in-house baking is a special feature.
The Cinema Paradiso* features in the Lonely Planet New Zealand entry on Wanaka, which declares. "Deservedly one of Wanaka's biggest attractions, anf just maybe a New Zealand national treasure...Shows include Hollywood blockbusters and a surprisinly eclectic and international mix of art-house flicks".
The smaller Cinema Paradiso in Methven isn't connected to the Wanaka cinema--but it is an illustration of the lingering influence of the film of the same name!)
