Geoff's Review
UPDATE (Sept 2015)
I have heard from a much aggrieved local, telling me that the Gold Cinemas have been purchased by Event Cinemas and closed, with little warning and less explanation. it does seem rather peculiar that a university town
such as Palmerston North, with its large potential audience, no longer has an art cinema.
Original Description
With its venues in Havelock North, Palmerston North and The Paramount in Wellington, Cinema Gold is now the fourth biggest chain in New Zealand. The Downtown cinema complex (and it is complex!) was the first purpose-built multiplex in New Zealand and it appears to be thriving. Situated centrally in a two-level retail arcade, there are films for all tastes: upstairs there is mainstream/family fare (including 3-D in a 273-seater auditorium) plus one Rialto screen which overlaps with the two-screen art house offering at Cinema Gold on the ground floor. These screens provide for a broad and diverse audience, which includes the significant student/staff population of Massey University.
Cinema Gold is small, with a narrow entrance, but there is a welcoming atmosphere inside and a good range of recent art house releases.
These Downtown cinemas are 'independent' in respect of not being directly affiliated to the major chains--but there is little else offering cinema-wise in Palmerston North, except for Film Society screenings which are hosted in Screen 7 upstairs.
Interesting food outlets nearby, which include O'Brien's Irish Sandwich Cafe which does a good BLT (but not sure what is Irish about it).
Check out the Regent on Broadway across the street; a grand old cinema which has been renovated and re-opened as a live event venue.
