Geoff's Review
Catering for an affluent local population (fruit-growing, tourism, retirees), the Cathay Cinema is an appealing small cinema. A newish establishment but one which reflects a long history (the ‘Cathay’ evokes the use of the site as a community hall in the 1930s), it is the only local cinema for an audience catchment of 15,000, providing a good mix of films across three screens for families and art house aficionados. Also hosts the local leg of the New Zealand International Film Festival.
A good place to catch a film whilst on holiday, in a cinema with a nice ambience.
When I visited in early December 2020, it was closed on Mon/Tues/Thurs but btyhere are likely to be more daily screenings post-Christmas.
