Geoff's Review
Another cinema for Christchurch, following the opening of the Lumiere in the Arts Centre. Lincoln probably regards itself as a separate entity, given the proximity of Lincoln University, but it is only a short drive from the city. The Apollo is a venture of locals Martin and Lisa Bennett, and prides itself on being 'the smallest cinema in the South Island" (a claim with some legitimacy, I believe, in respect of a stand-alone screen). It is an integral part of The Laboratory; a brewery, bar and eatery.
The following message from Martin (from October 2019) provides more information:
Selwyn’s only commercial cinema opened this month. The 15 seat boutique movie theatre is located within the Laboratory Brewpub and Eatery at 17 West Belt, Lincoln. It will be showing a selection of the latest films. It is open from Tuesday to Sunday with 4 or 5 screenings a day. The cinema has been fitted out to the very highest standards with 15 comfortable armchairs, sumptuous carpets, outstanding soundproofing and amazing sound and vision. The intimate nature of the room with the perfect sized screen gives you an immersive experience very unlike sitting in a huge hall with 100 people around you. Naturally you are able to take in a drink from the bar along with a selection of snacks or a freshly scooped ice cream cone.
The Cinema is the brainchild of Lincoln entrepreneurs Martin and Lisa Bennett, owners of The Laboratory. Their passion for cinema left them with no alternative but to build their own, for themselves and for the other residents of Selwyn! They shall be showing most of the current releases along with some old favourites, themed festivals, dress-up nights and singalong screenings. The theatre is available to be booked for private screenings if enough notice is given.
The Laboratory is well know for its use of recycled materials, being built after the earthquake but in the style of a 100 year old building. To fit in with the existing building the alterations necessary for the cinema have been sympathetically designed, and ‘weathered’ to have that century old look, while the interior is state of the art.
Martin and Lisa want to welcome film lovers from all walks of life by offering ‘Bring your Baby’ sessions, discounted tickets for seniors and students during the weekdays, special family tickets for kids films and even dementia friendly screenings are in the pipeline. The move theatre has one removable seat suitable for a wheelchair, and headsets for a hearing loop designed to help the hard of hearing enjoy the films.
I got to visit the Apollo in December 2019 and was impressed, The place was bustling and an added attraction was an outdoor film screening in an adjacent grassed arena. The building may have been constructed in 2014 but it looks like it has been there much longer, with the Apollo as a featured attraction.
