Geoff's Review
According to cinema owner and long-time film buff Patrick Walsh, this historic cinema (est. 1924) has 'become more of a tourist attraction than a fully-thriving, community-oriented cinema'. Possibly one reason for this is that Geraldine itself has changed, with an influx of new residents from Christchurch and expatriates from other places, Perhaps the community needs to treasure it rather more: when we visited in December 2019, Patrick was bewailing the fact that a school party had wilfully damaged the screen the day before.] But the Geraldine Cinema will persist; the building is council-owned and is due for earthquake-strengthening. The cinema provides a good mix of recent mainstream and art house films.
You can access a detail history of the cinema and its former role as the Geraldine Town Hall http://www.rootsweb.ancestrt.com/-nzlscant/town_hall.htm
